Mourners at a funeral of a road crash victim helped emergency services after a car ploughed in to schoolchildren outside a Suffolk church.

Nine pupils out of a group of 20 from Worlingham Middle School were hurt while on a walk around the village, near Beccles, on Friday afternoon.

Five children, two with serious injuries, remain in hospital.

A 40-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving has been released on police bail until November.

The accident happened on Lowestoft Road, close to All Saints Church, while a teacher was introducing the nine and 10-year-old children to the local area.

A retained firefighter who was among emergency crews called to the scene said that a funeral of a road crash victim was happening at the church at the same time.

Writing in his blog about the accident, he said: "We pulled up... to be confronted by the sight of so many children scattered across the path and grass verge.

"Paramedics, firefighters and mourners from the funeral were all pitching in to assist the casualties."

The firefighter, who did not wish to be named, added: "And during all of this the funeral cortege had to be re-routed with the pall-bearers carrying the coffin into church via a hastily planned route through the churchyard.

"I just can´t get over how surreal the whole thing was.

A 21-year-old man who was also injured was on his way to the funeral.

He and a child have since been discharged from the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, where two children are being treated for serious injuries.

Three children with multiple minor injuries remain at James Paget Hospital in Gorleston, Norfolk.

All three children taken to Beccles Hospital were discharged on Friday.
